The northern part of the city of Killeen is classified as a “Food desert”. Which means it is difficult to find fresh produce within this area. With the absence of major grocery retailers in northern Killeen, our community gardens help fulfill the need for fresh produce.
Killeen Creators presently has three dedicated Community Gardens: One on North 10th St., one on North 18th St. and our third garden on Bundrant Drive. These are open to the public for community members to harvest the healthy food options that they need. Our gardens have no fences and serve as a leading example of creating and sharing abundance.
We have more gardens in development through partnerships and are in the midst of planning for a fourth one. Our goal is to have at least five throughout the city.
AmeriCorps members, community members and volunteers help plant the crops, tend the produce, learn and teach about gardening. Our gardens are completely organic with no use of pesticides. We offer many varieties of fruits and vegetables during different times of the year.
Excess produce is sold on a sliding fee scale at Farmer's Markets and donated to food pantries. Workshops are also held to teach people urban farming and the importance of knowing how to grow your own food for sustainability.
